Urban Plant Walk and Cyanotype workshops

I recently designed and led a series of workshops for UCL as part of their Trellis programme. The workshops were aimed at families and involved walking around Hoxton, identifying and learning about the plants that grow in the cracks of the pavement, the edges of walls and in all sorts of forgotten corners. We then made cyanotype prints of the plants we found.

The workshops aimed to foster an appreciation for the many plants that are often deemed weeds and targeted by councils spraying of herbicides. These plants are critical for maintaining and building up urban ecosystems. Many also have fascinating stories of use as food and medicine.

Flight Lines

Flight Lines was a mixed media art project by Ryan Powell charting humanities entangled relationship with the pigeon. The project set out to explore the more-than-human worlds that layer the city and documented stories of exclusion as well as care and attention across the divides of species.

The project involved people with experience of homelessness in creating poetry, photography and films through a series of creative workshops. These workshops were delivered in partnership with Crisis Skylight Brent. Participants built up a body of work that was then featured in an exhibition alongside pieces by sculptors, designers and photographers whose work shared the aim of unpicking the political dynamics currently shaping our urban landscapes.
